Cryopreservation (freezing) of semen

How we prepare insemination doses of canine sperm

  1. Semen is painlessly collected by digital manipulation, without any sedation.
  2. It does help if an in-season bitch is available. However, this is not always essential.
  3. After collection, semen quality is evaluated and the number of insemination doses is calculated.
  4. Two 0.5-ml plastic straws usually constitute one insemination dose.
  5. Quality of insemination doses is checked by evaluation of a frozen-thawed control straw.
  6. Insemination doses are stored in liquid nitrogen until applied or transported, according to the client’s wishes.
  7. Besides traditional returnable transport tanks, we offer one-way dry shipper Cryodrum for shipment of semen. The client does not pay for return of an empty container. Moreover, its weight is lower than that of common shipping containers with liquid nitrogen. However, there is a higher risk of its damage during transport!
  8. Frozen-thawed semen should be deposited directly into the uterus to increase the conception rate. Intrauterine insemination always requires a special approach: (1) using an endoscope or Scandinavian catheter for passing through the cervix to deposit semen into the uterus; (2) surgical insemination can also be done.
  9. The time of fertilization ability of frozen-thawed semen is much shorter in comparison with fresh semen.
  10. The insemination requires exact timing when the eggs are mature and ready for fertilization.
  11. The most reliable method for calculation of the optimum time for insemination is based on the blood progesterone test.
