IMPORT OF FROZEN SEMEN
-
IMPORT FROM EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES
When semen is imported from EU countries, the consignment is not inspected by the border veterinary authorities or subject to customs procedures. Therefore, all you have to do is to give the foreign sperm bank our contact details and fill in the import application form on our website. You can either arrange the transport with the exporting sperm bank or we will send our tank and arrange the transport.
For further use of cryopreserved semen, i.e. insemination, the DNA profile of the dog (semen donor) has been required by the Czech-Moravian Cynological Union since December 2020. Please arrange this with the dog owner.
PRICING
- Rental of a shipping container for frozen semen (filled with liquid nitrogen): 2600 CZK
- Semen intake to sperm bank and consultation: 1500 CZK
- Annual storage of 1 straw: 150 CZK (the number of pellet forming 1 insemination dose varies according to the manufacturer). In case of storage of frozen seed in pellets, the price is 500 CZK per 1 insemination dose.
- The price of transport depends on the address of the recipient (foreign sperm bank).
IMPORT FROM COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE EU
For the import of semen from other than EU countries, it is necessary to first submit an application to the Czech State Veterinary Administration (SVA) so an import permit is issued. Applications shall be accepted at epodatelna@svscr.cz and shall be sent at least 15 days before the envisaged date of importation. The application shall contain the following information:
- breed of dog (semen donor)
- confirmation that it is frozen semen
- number of sperm doses for import
- address of the exporter - foreign sperm bank (place of dispatch and, if applicable, place of collection of the semen)
- destination in the Czech Republic - Frozen Dogs s.r.o., MVDr. Petra Přinosilová, Ph.D., Libušina tř. 945/10, 623 00 Brno - emphasize that Frozen Dogs s.r.o. is an IMPORTER (must be indicated on the issued import permit)
- the point of entry into the EU, i.e. the border inspection post where the consignment will be presented for border veterinary checks
- the applicant's name, date of birth, mailing address and telephone number
- the purpose of the importation, to take account of it when establishing the veterinary conditions of importation (it is important to note that these are not goods for commercial purposes)
With the import permit you will also receive a Veterinary Health Certificate for semen entry (ENG/CZ version) from the SVS. The import permit must be officially translated into English. You will receive confirmation of the correctness of the translation from the translator (round stamp). We will then send the documents to the foreign country by email. The foreign official veterinarian will endorse the Veterinary Health Certificate for the entry of semen, which then accompanies the consignment together with the import permit to the border veterinary station at the point of entry into the EU.
The condition of import is serological examination of the dog for Brucella canis. The blood for this test must be taken between 20 days before and 30 days after the semen collection and freezing. In addition, proof that the dog has been vaccinated against Leptospirosis (or if not, a serological examination of the dog is required). If for some reason it is not possible for the dog to meet these conditions (e.g. it is already dead), an exemption can be requested from the SVS CR.
In addition, the dog must be examined on the day of semen collection and show no clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease, and have a valid rabies vaccination (not required if the third country or region is free of rabies virus).
In order for everything to go smoothly at the border, we need to inform the customs department of the transport company in advance. For this reason, please provide a contact to a foreign veterinarian exporting sperm banks to hand over the completed export documents in advance electronically.

As a standard, we do not insure shipments of semen to/from countries outside the European Union in order not to increase the costs of customs duties and VAT. If you wish to insure your shipment, please inform us in advance. Payment for the service associated with the transport of the semen is required in advance before the shipment is dispatched.
