ASSISTANCE DURING INSEMINATION
Are you planning insemination? Read the following information and prepare well in advance.
INSEMINATION WITH FROZEN SEMEN
-
In order for insemination with frozen semen to be successful, it is necessary to carry it out into the uterus. Due to the anatomy of the bitch reproductive system, intrauterine insemination requires a special approach: it is possible to choose the so-called transcervical (non-invasive) approach (using an endoscope or Scandinavian catheter), or a surgical approach.
The fertilization time of the thawed semen is significantly shorter than that of fresh one. Therefore, insemination must be set for the time when the bitch's eggs are matured and ready for fertilization. The most accurate determination of the optimal insemination time is using a progesterone test. Additional information will also be provided by sonographic examination, cytological examination of vaginal smear and information from the breeder.
The insemination operation is performed at the cooperating workplace of the Clinic of Dog and Cat Diseases of the VetUni Brno. The procedure of transcervical insemination is painless and there is usually no need to sedate the bitch. A control examination of progesterone and a sonographic examination of the bitch is also carried out there. The semen is transported by us at the specified time of insemination to the VetUni and thawed on site and prepared for insemination. The date of insemination is determined by the bitch, so we are also available on weekends and holidays.
Timing of insemination is therefore one of the most important factors and requires close cooperation between our workplace and the bitch owner. For this reason, you need to get in touch with us as soon as your bitch starts her season and stay in touch until the time of insemination.
In order to inseminate a preserved semen, the DNA profile of the semen donor has been required by the Czech-Moravian Cynological Union since December 2020.
INSEMINATION WITH CHILLED SEMEN
-
It is advisable to inseminate the chilled semen into the uterus. The so-called transcervikal (non-invasive) insemination is used for this. Endoscopic transcervical insemination is performed at a cooperating workplace of the Dept. of Reproduction of the Clinic of Dogs and Cats Diseases at the VetUni Brno without the need for our intervention. Here he also conducts a control examination of progesterone and a sonographic examination of the. The procedure is painless and usually there is no need to sedate the bitch.
Please contact the VetUni workplace directly (tel. to the surgery: +420 41562331).
The advantage of using a chilled semen is the cheaper price of the whole process than when using frozen semen, and thanks to the longer sperm survival in the reproductive tract of bitch, as well as a higher successful pregnancy rate. The disadvantage is the risk of semen damage along the way, for example, due a transport delay, and the fact that if the fresh semen is found to be of poor quality or cannot be collected at all, you have little time left to arrange another stud dog.
Most transport boxes for chilled semen will maintain the necessary temperature of 5 to 10 °C (at which the semen must be all the time until insemination) for a maximum of 40 h. It also depends on the ambient temperature of the environment. At a high external temperature, the endurance is shortened, on the contrary, if it freezes outside, there is a risk of semen freezing which is detrimental to the semen. Sperm destruction occurs even when heated and thus prematurely exhausted. For this reason, it is necessary to ensure delivery ideally within the second day after shipment.
It is advisable to inseminate from the chilled semen up to the 5th day after its collection, so everything needs to be timed consistently. Termination of insemination must be carried out according to a progesterone test. Another factor to take into account is that carriers only work on weekdays.
In order to inseminate a preserved semen, the DNA profile of the semen donor has been required by the Czech-Moravian Cynological Union since December 2020.
