In order for insemination with frozen semen to be successful, it is necessary to carry it out into the uterus. Due to the anatomy of the bitch reproductive system, intrauterine insemination requires a special approach: it is possible to choose the so-called transcervical (non-invasive) approach (using an endoscope or Scandinavian catheter), or a surgical approach.
The fertilization time of the thawed semen is significantly shorter than that of fresh one. Therefore, insemination must be set for the time when the bitch's eggs are matured and ready for fertilization. The most accurate determination of the optimal insemination time is using a progesterone test. Additional information will also be provided by sonographic examination, cytological examination of vaginal smear and information from the breeder.
The transcervical insemination procedure is painless and usually the bitch does not need to be sedated. The date of insemination is determined by the bitch, so we are also available on weekends and holidays.
Timing of insemination is one of the most important factors and requires close cooperation between our department and the bitch owner. For this reason, you need to get in touch with us as soon as your bitch starts biting and stay in touch until the time of insemination.

The advantage of using cooled semen is the cheaper cost of the whole process than using frozen semen, and due to the longer survival of sperm in the reproductive tract of the bitch, a higher chance of impregnation of the bitch, approaching insemination with fresh semen. The disadvantage isthe risk of damage to the semen on the way, if, for example, the semen is damaged. If the semen is found to be of poor quality or cannot be collected at all, you have limited time to secure another dog.
Most refrigerated semen transport boxes will maintain the required temperature of 5 to 10 °C (at which the semen must be kept for a maximum of 40 h until insemination). It also depends on the ambient temperature. If the outside temperature is high, the shelf life is reduced; if it is freezing outside, the seed is at risk of freezing and thus being destroyed. Sperm destruction also occurs when the sperm is heated, as premature exhaustion occurs. For this reason, it is necessary to ensure that the shipment is delivered ideally within the next day of dispatch.
Since chilled semen should ideally be inseminated max. 5 days after collection, everything must be timed carefully. Termination of insemination must be done according to the progesterone test. Another factor to take into account is the delivery by transport companies only on working days.
